Custom Orthotics
Most people assume that chiropractic care only involves the back and neck. Actually, it’s a holistic process that can involve any part of your body. The foot, in particular, can be a major concern when it comes to your spine’s health.
All of the body’s weight is distributed through our feet. Uneven distribution can affect the way we walk and stand. These changes are primarily felt in the hips, pelvis and lumbar spine. Eventually, a misalignment of the spine may occur causing pain and a loss of function.
Custom orthotics may help to correct the issue. Studying the structures of your foot and how the foot moves may prove helpful in determining whether there’s a problem that needs to be addressed.
What are Custom Orthotics?
Prescription orthotics may look like insoles, but they’re biomechanical medical appliances that are custom-made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics are three-dimensional inserts for your shoes. They are made from precise images of your feet. Orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole.
Each person is unique in their foot structure, arch height and walking form; Dr. Faught will provide you with an orthotic that is unique to your feet and each foot’s unique structure, arch height, and walking form.
By providing support, stability and balance, custom orthotics address structural and/or functional foot conditions. Custom orthotics help restore the normal balance and alignment of your body by gently correcting foot abnormalities. They reduce problems associated with pressure points, muscle strain and abnormal forces on ankles, knees, hip and spine.
Over a period of time, you should begin to feel relief from the consistent pain. A return of proper foot biomechanics allows you to walk, run, jump and move freely without pain or dysfunction.
In some cases, constant foot pain is not present. This does not mean problems don’t exist. Symptoms of imbalance and/or gait issues can include any of the following:
- Localized foot pain
- Bunions, hammer toes
- Arch/heel pain
- Leg/knee pain
- Hip/back or neck pain
Sometimes, foot issues are due to an injury or a heredity problem. Excess weight gain, walking or standing on hard pavement for long periods of time and shoes without the proper support can also influence balance and posture.
Dr. Faught will do a thorough biomechanical assessment as well as a postural and gait analysis before making a diagnosis. Once done, he will make a foam cast of your foot and send it out for production.
Dr. Faught uses two companies, The Orthotic Group and Atlas Orthotics to create your custom orthotics. The specific company used will depend on what Dr. Faught determines as a result of your foot and orthotic assessment.
